We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an excellent find of a remarkable, beautifully designed, unique, animated, musical mountain chalet cuckoo clock that was created about 35 years ago in "Switzerland" by "Robert Lotscher, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. The clock is made to look like a large old mountain chalet like many that still are a large part of the Alps and Black Forest. It has a sophisticated look to it and scallop eaves with hand painted flowers and vines as well as a fancy upper wooden balcony with even more flowers; very pretty! There are four colorful wooden dancers mounted on a rotating dance platform just behind the balcony and wooden doorways on either end that allow the dancers to pass through the clock. There are windows with wood shutters and flower boxes just below on either side of the upper dial.
The lower balcony is carved too with more flowers in front and features a wood shed cover with a wooden water wheel to the left and a wooden water well and trough with a wooden pine tree behind it; very nice! The wood dial has a woodtone backdrop and features Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The country name, "Switzerland" is found just under center and the familiar "Lotscher" logo label is found on the lower right side of the case.
The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. The back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that bears the Lotscher name and the Switzerland point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music and animation, and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dance floor and stands in the doorway.
He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. Then when the bird is back in the case, a high quality " Swiss Mapsa" music box inside the case plays an extraordinary rendition of "The Happy Wanderer, " a very popular old tune and all the while, the colorful dancers spin about while the platform rotates and the water wheel turns. The dancers and animation stop when the music stops. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him.
When he is safely inside, the dance platform begins to turn yet again and the dancers spin about while the water wheel turns as the music box plays a wonderful version of "Edelweiss, " a classic popular tune from the Sound of Music. The dancers stop dancing and the wheel stops turning when the music is over and wait until the next opportunity; absolutely fascinating! This clock has another great feature. There is a lever on the side of the clock that allows you to disable the cuckoo and music activities as you wish which is great for light sleepers or when company is in town.
There is also an intact label on the side of the case identifying the song titles, Mapsa manufacture, and Swiss origin. The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, cuckoos well too, and animates as it was designed to do. The music too is extraordinary!
Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.
The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style pendulum and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces. It shows average or less signs of use and is one of the most beautiful clocks you could ever hang on a wall. The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 12 1/2" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point, and about 10 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, animated, musical Swiss timepiece with a solid history behind it.
