There are two carved wooden parent birds tending to the nest and another, larger carved wooden bird at the very top looking as though he's ready to take flight. All of the trim and carvings are deep and wavy and have a gorgeous blended mahogany finish with hand painted flowers and vines on each leaf; very nice! It is a most impressive clock and it measures about 16" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" at its deepest point, and about 11 1/2 at its widest point.
The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The dial has a brown backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of fancy matching hands to point out the time.
The country name, "Germany" appears just below the center of the dial. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. The back removes to allow access to the mechanical weight driven movement created by "Regula" and bearing the D Hones name and Titisee-Neustadt Germany as the point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity.
The bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops make good sound too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. While the bird is making his rounds, the parent birds move up and down as if tending to the nest and they stop when the cuckoo sounds are through and the bird is back inside the case. The cuckoo bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos the current number of hours and all the while, the parent birds rock up and down as the bird is singing his cuckoo and chime song; absolutely fascinating! Keep in mind that even though the clock looks fairly new, it is still an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.
Ive looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any missing pieces, damage, or signs of wear; absolutely gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a wonderful, animated, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
