Very Nice Antique German Black Forest Feeding Birds Chick In Nest Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an excellent, rare find of a beautiful, working, animated mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 65 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. The clock is of the highest quality, ornately detailed, well maintained, and has a remarkable blended walnut and color finish! It is the ideal size too measuring about 12" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" at its deepest point, and about 9 at its widest point. The clock is well preserved and carved the old world, high standard way. The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The clock front is designed to look like an intricate grape vine and trim, adorned with four, nicely carved wooden grape leaves and vines.

There is a heavily carved wooden nest at the base of the clock and a colorful wooden chick resides in it. There is a colorful carved wooden bird on either side of the upper nest and an equally impressive, beautifully carved large bird sitting atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of matching fancy hands to point out the time.

The word, "Germany" appears at the bottom of the dial and embossed on the back as well. The back secured with a metal latch and removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement created by "Regula" and bearing the Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look good and make good sound.

At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case while the birds flutter up and back as if feeding their baby bird. The bird then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current hour and all the while, the birds flutter up and back before the bird goes back inside the case and closes the door; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too.

Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.

Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a fancy, hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, unpacking and set up instructions, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I've looked the clock over fairly well and found average or less signs of wear and a great patina; just gorgeous on display!

This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, very unique, animated, mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
