Stunning Old Large German 8 Day Deeply Carved 3 Bird Black Forest Cuckoo Clock

We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is a very nice find of a breathtaking, large, deeply hand carved, 8 day mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 70 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. This clock is one of the most ornately carved clocks I've ever seen. It has a rare three bird case and a very nice, rare deep Mahogany finish!

The clock is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine complete with seven, large hand carved grape leaves on the front, fancy branches, and another carved grape leaf is found on the ornate wooden pendulum. The clock has a large, beautifully carved bird perched to the left of the wooden dial and another, equally impressive carved wooden bird is perched to the right.

Both are staring upward with their amber eyes at a bit more complex bird with a sparkling blue eye perched in the branches atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case that are secured with a metal hasp. Both doors open easily to allow access to the movement in case any adjustments are needed from this angle.

The back is wood too and secured with two metal latches. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was produced by "Regula" and bears the Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden whistle or bellow tubes are intact and make good sound. A t the bottom of each hour, a colorful bakelite bird opens the small door above the wooden dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.

The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos quite well too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement shows signs of past service.

Regardless, some service or adjustments may be necessary once it arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.

Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved, fancy, wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces and only average or less signs of use; just a few nicks here and there.

I did notice an old repair on the upper frame but it's hard to see and not detracting. Overall, the clock has a nice rustic look to it and is just gorgeous on display! The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 15 1/2" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 11 across the top.

This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
