The clock is of the highest quality, ornately detailed, well maintained, and has a remarkable deep mahogany finish! It is the ideal size too measuring about 18" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 8" or so at its deepest point, and about 13 at its widest point. The clock is remarkably preserved and carved the old world, high standard way back when clocks were created one-at-a-time. The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.
The clock front is designed to look like an intricate grape vine and trim, adorned with seven, large, nicely carved wooden grape leaves and vines. There is a heavily carved, large bird perched to the left side of the wooden dial and an equally impressive, beautifully carved large bird mounted to the right side. Both are looking upward at an even larger, ornately carved bird atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight.
The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The top is a separate carving attached to the case with the old hook and eye system. There is a hinged wooden door on each side of the clock and each is secured with a metal latch. They open to allow for any adjustment from this angle if ever required. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, early, rack style, mechanical, weight driven movement. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current hour before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him; absolutely fascinating!
The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance.
Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a fancy, hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.Ive looked the clock over fairly well and found a nicely-done repair on the old hour hand but no missing pieces or damage; maybe a nick here and there but nothing detracting... The clock has a great patina and is just gorgeous on display!

We'd be glad to send more pictures if available; just ask! My wife and I have been accumulating lots of nice antiques and other collectors items over the years. But now is a good time to start clearing out the things we no longer wish to keep. We do all that we can to accurately describe each item to the best of our ability.
