Rare Lightly Used Black Forest German Musical Widows Walk Chalet Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of a beautiful, lightly used, working, musical mountain chalet cuckoo clock that was created about 35 years ago in the Black Forest of "Triberg, Germany" by "Hubert Herr, " one of the finest clock makers to come from this region of the world. This rare clock is referred to as the Widows Walk Chalet since there are steps that start on either side of the front and go all the way back to the back of the clock. It closely resembles the old farm houses that used to dot the landscape in the Black Forest...

Some still do to this day. The case is made from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. There are timbers serving as beams just under the roof eaves and wooden logs appear there as well. The roof itself has several faux boulders on it which were used to keep the roofs on during bad weather in the Alps Mountains. The walkways and steps are supported by square beams of their own and there is tapered and beveled wooden trim on the sides.

There are two detailed windows on either side of the two small doors above the dial and two more with wooden shutters on either side of the upper dial... All have colorful flower boxes under them and more on the front of the steps too. There is a lower balcony finished in green near the bottom. There is a wooden Black Forest lady on the left side, a stack of wooden logs near her and a white stone too. There is a stack of logs to the right side near the steps and a water well and trough on the far right by the steps and walkway. There is a carved wooden trim under the front and a fancy scalloped trim with flower boxes just above it.

The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with two latches. The back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was produced by Hubert Herr, bears his name, and the Triberg Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music, and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too.

At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door to the right above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him. When he is safely inside, the door to the left above the dial opens and a colorful man holding a Zither appears in the doorway. At the same time, a high quality, "Swiss Reuge Romance" music box plays a lovely rendition of "Edelweiss, " my all time favorite tune from the Sound of Music.

When the music stops, the man goes back inside the case and closes the door; absolutely fascinating! There is a fully intact label on the back of the clock identifying the song title, Swiss origin, and Reuge manufacture.

The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it was designed to do, and the music is wonderful too! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of maintenance but regardless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.

Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces and very little signs of use; gorgeous on display!

The clock is the ideal size too measuring about 8" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 9 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, rare, musical German timepiece with a solid history behind it. If you like this item and I'm sure you do, then I know you'll love the other items. Check back frequently since we're listing a lot of antique/vintage items as time allows!
