Rare German Fox In A Vineyard 2 Tune Music Hagos Hrastnig Bavarian Cuckoo Clock

We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is a wonderful find of a very rare, antique, deeply hand carved, unique musical cuckoo clock that was created about 65 years ago in Furstenfeldbruck, Bavaria "Germany" by Hagos Hrastnig, one of the finest and more creative clock makers in this region of the world! The clock is a stunning survivor and has a remarkable blended mahogany and color finish.

It's an impressive size too measuring about 18" high (from the top to the bottom of the leaf cluster and not counting the weights, chains, or pendulum), about 7 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 12 at its widest point. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which has been the choice of clock carvers since the 1870's. T he whole scene is made to look like a lovely grape vine complete with eleven large grape leaves, clusters of colorful grapes, and a detailed vine too; very nice! T here is a beautifully carved, large wooden bird mounted atop the clock staring warily downward at an equally impressive carved wooden fox trotting through the vineyard. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching, fancy hands to point out the time.

The country name, "Germany" appears on the lower dial in block letters. The wooden back is secured with a metal latch and removes easily to allow access to the mechanical, weight driven movement produced by Hagos Hrastnig and bears the "Made in Germany" point of origin too. A weight driven movement simply means the weights need to be pulled occasionally in order to wind the clock, cuckoo/chime activities, and the music as well. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case and each is secured with a metal latch.

They open easily and conveniently in case any adjustments are ever needed from this angle. The wooden bellow tubes and tops look to be in good shape and they make good sound too.

At the bottom of each hour, the wooden door to the right above the dial opens and a colorful bird stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock and closing the door. When he's safely inside, the other wooden door above the dial opens and colorful man holding a zither in his lap appears in the doorway. At the same time, a high quality "Swiss Thorens" music box inside the case plays a wonderful rendition of "Blaue Donau Walzer" (Blue Danube Waltz).

When the music is finished, the man goes back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock and closing the door. When he's back inside the wooden door to the left above the dial opens and the man appears in the doorway yet again but this time the Swiss music box plays a lovely rendition of "Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald" or as I know it, Tales of the Vienna Woods. There is an intact label on the left side of the case identifying the song title, Thorens manufacture, and Switzerland origin. When the music is through, the man retreats to the confines of the clock and closes the door; absolutely fascinating!

The clock works very well here, keeps good time, cuckoos and chimes as it should, and the music is very nice too. Keep in mind that even though it looks like it's a newer clock, it is not.

This is an old clock and we don't know the service history despite the movement appearing to have had some maintenance in the past and some repair labels on the back door too. The clock may need service or repairs we don't see here once it arrives at its new home which is why we recommend to our clock buyers to do the simple maintenance as the factory recommends...

Doing so will keep a classic clock like this one running strong for years to come. I've looked the clock over fairly well and found a nicely-done, hard to see old repair on the upper frame and a chip on the wing but no damage or missing parts. It has average or less wear for a 65 year-old clock and is simply gorgeous on display! The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights, and a decorative, wooden grape leaf pendulum too. This clock is just remarkable and a great example of the artistic quality found among German carvers for over 160 years.

B id with absolute confidence; I have a great deal of confidence in knowing that you will love this clock! If you like this item and I'm sure you do, then I know you'll love the other items. Check back frequently since we're listing a lot of antique/vintage items as time allows! We'd be glad to send more pictures if available; just ask!

My wife and I have been accumulating lots of nice antiques and other collectors items over the years. But now is a good time to start clearing out the things we no longer wish to keep. We do all that we can to accurately describe each item to the best of our ability. Be sure to add commits to your favorites list.
