The clock is made to look like the old mountain chalets of yesteryear in the Swiss/German Alps. The clock is constructed mainly of cured and aged Linden wood and has a wooden shake roof and sides. The clock features hand carved trim just under the roof eaves on either side of a wooden balcony located just above the dial. The balcony has fancy wooden scallops in the front overhang and there are four colorful dance couples mounted on a rotating dance platform just behind the balcony. The lower balcony in front extends most of the way back on both sides. It is also hand carved and features a large, hand carved Pine tree to the left, a carved wooden Doe and her Fawn in the middle, and a wooden toboggan mounted to the right. The wooden dial has a woodtone backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. The back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was produced by "Regula" and bears the Western Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music and animation, and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dance floor and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. At that moment, a high quality "Cuendet Swiss" music box plays an extraordinary rendition of "Die Muhle im Schwarzwald" (the Black Forest Mill), a very popular old tune and all the while, the colorful dancers spin about while the platform rotates! The dancers stop when the music stops. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him. When he is safely inside, the dance platform begins to turn yet again and the dancers spin about as the music box plays a wonderful version of "Holzhackerbub'n Marsch" (Wood Choppers March), an equally popular lively tune. The dancers stop dancing when the music is over and wait until the next opportunity; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it was designed to do, and the music is wonderful! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of maintenance but regardless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.
Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style pendulum, the original factory instructions in English, French, German, and Spanish, the original box and packing materials, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces; maybe a nick here and there but nothing detracting. The clock is one of the most beautiful clocks you could ever hang on a wall, shows little signs of use, and has a wonderful look to it.The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 13" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 10 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, animated, musical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
