Rare Antique German Berg Import Black Forest 2 Bird Musical Cuckoo Clock Project
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. I had always hoped to find time some day to work on this wonderful clock but I simply don't have the time any longer as I used to. This is an excellent, rare find of a beautifully and deeply carved, antique hunter mechanical cuckoo clock with one of the first music boxes ever placed into a clock. It was created about 100 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany" for the "Berg Importing Company" and their name is embossed on the wooden back as shown in one of the pictures.

The clock is of the highest quality, ornately detailed, and has the original deep mahogany finish! It is an impressive size too measuring about 17 1/2" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 8" or so at its deepest point, and about 13 at its widest point. The clock is remarkably preserved and carved the old world, high standard way back when clocks were created one-at-a-time. It is a project to be sure and does show signs of wear and repairs to the case but nothing can detract from this stunning antique! The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.

There is a heavily carved, large bird perched to the lower left side of the wooden dial and an equally impressive, beautifully and ornately carved large bird mounted at the top looking as though he's ready to take flight. The clock front is designed to look like an intricate grape vine and trim, adorned with five, large, nicely carved wooden grape leaves and vines. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The hours are the old style that are nailed to the dial, not glued on.

The country name, "Germany" appears on the lower dial. The top is a separate carving attached to the case with the old hook and eye system. There is a hinged wooden door on each side of the clock and each is secured with a metal latch. They open to allow for any adjustment from this angle if ever required.

The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, early, rack style, mechanical, weight driven movement bearing the "Berg Importing Company" name and the "Germany" point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact; they look and sound good too. The clock does work and keep time but I don't have the weights to test the cuckoo activity.

I did test the music manually and the music box works well too. Once repaired, this is what it should do: a t the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the small door to the right above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current hour before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him. When he's safely inside, the door to the left above the dial opens and a Wooden Black Forest Man holding a Zither appears in the doorway. This is the first clock I've ever seen with the wooden man in it; wow! Then the Thorens Swiss music box plays a heavenly version of "Wien, Stadt Meiner Traume" (Vienna, City of My Dreams) before going back inside the clock and closing the door. To see it all work would be absolutely fascinating!

The clock works just fine here with a borrowed weight and keeps good time too using a borrowed pendulum. Not sure what the cuckoo needs or the music box but I'm sure weights and a pendulum would help some. Keep in mind this is a very old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.

The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains. The clock has a great patina and is just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, very unique, antique mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
