Nice Working Old German Black Forest Music Dancers Chalet Serenade Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of a working, animated, musical mountain chalet cuckoo clock that was created about 50 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, Villingen "West Germany" by "Emil Schmeckenbecher, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. The clock is remarkably well preserved, has a great aging glow, and has been maintained over the years. It is made to look like an old Burgermeister City Hall where all of the local festive community dances are held. The clock features hand carved trim from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.

There is green scalloped wood trim just under the roof edge and simulated boulders and wooden beams on the roof that were used on the real city buildings to keep the roof on during harsh weather. The front is lavished with carved wooden logs on the sides and under the roof line. There are wooden windows on either side of the upper case and all have shutters on them though one is missing.

There is a fancy wooden balcony with colorful flower boxes just above the dial as well as four colorful dance couples mounted on a rotating dance platform just behind the balcony. The lower balcony is also hand carved and has hand painted Edelweiss flowers and vines. The balcony features a colorful Black Forest man holding an accordian sitting to the right and a colorful Black Forest lady is featured sitting on the left edge... Looks like an old fashioned serenade to me.

The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare pair of matching, fancy wooden hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. The back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement created by "Regula" and bearing the Schmeckenbecher name and West Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music and animation, and cuckoo activity.

The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small red wooden door above the dance floor and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him.

When he is safely inside, the dance platform begins to turn and the dancers spin about as a Swiss music box inside the case plays an extraordinary version of "Der Frolische Wanderer" (Happy Wanderer), one of the world's favorite tunes. The dancers stop dancing when the music is over and wait until the next opportunity; absolutely fascinating! There is an intact label on the back identifying the song title.

The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it was designed to do, and the music is wonderful! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of maintenance but regardless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.

The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces; maybe a nick here and there or a hard-to-see old repair but nothing detracting. The clock has a wonderful patina, shows average signs of use, and is just gorgeous on display. The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 10" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" at its deepest point, and about 11 across the top.

This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, animated, musical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
