There is beveled and tapered wooden trim under the roof line on both the left and right sides and it is attached to the wooden balcony above the dial. The balcony features heavily scalloped wooden trim and there are wooden windows with shutters and flower boxes just below on each side of the upper dial; very nice! The hand carved lower balcony is very fancy and features a colorful Black Forest man standing to the left side holding an accordian while an equally stunning, colorful Black Forest lady is featured seated on a park bench to the right side... Looks like an old fashioned serenade to me.The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The country origin, "Germany" is found on the lower dial and a fancy embossed metal plate is found below the dial and features the "Seth Thomas" name in Old English block letters. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It has a fully intact label on the back identifying the model, make, and Germany origin. The back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that bears the JMIUS name. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity.
The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small green wooden door above the upper balcony and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it was designed to do!
Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of maintenance but regardless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces. The clock shows little signs of use, is beautifully designed, gorgeous on display, and has a wonderful aging glow to it. The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 12" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point, and about 10 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, high quality German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
