We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. The clock is positively breathtaking and designed to look like an old style mountain cabin like many that used to dot the landscape in the northern Alps. It is quite impressive and measures about 8 1/2" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point and about 10 at its widest point.
It is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the southern Black Forest. There are wooden timbers under the roof line and more timbers and simulated boulders on the roof like the full size homes that used to have these on the roof to keep it on during bad weather.
There are several simulated flower boxes on the front and windows on either side of the dial complete with more flower boxes and wooden shutters. Timber styled logs are located from near top to bottom on either side of the case as well as a wooden walkway with steps on the left side. The lower balcony also features a stack of logs, a tree trunk with kindling, more flowers, and a carved wooden dog in front of his wooden dog house; really nice! The wood dial has a black backdrop and features Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. The phrase, "Swiss made" is found just below center.
The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case produced by Regula and bearing the R Lotscher name and "Switzlerland" point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music, and cuckoo activity.
The bellow or whistle tubes look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small rustic door to the right above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. When he is safely inside, the rustic wooden door to the left opens and a colorful man with a Zither in his lap appears in the doorway. At the same time, a high quality, "Swiss Cuendet" music box inside the case plays a wonderful rendition of "Lara's Theme from Dr Zhivago, " one of the most recognized and beloved tunes ever. When the music is through, the man retreats back inside the clock and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him. Once he's inside, the door to the left above the dial opens again and the colorful man appears yet again in the doorway but this time the Swiss music box plays a heavenly rendition of "Edelweiss, " (one of the most popular tunes ever composed from the Sound of Music) before the man retreats back inside the case and closes the door; absolutely fascinating! There is a fully intact label on the back of the lower wooden case trim identifying the Swiss origin, Cuendet manufacture, and the song titles. The clock works just fine here, cuckoos well, keeps good time, and the music is very nice too. But I noticed the music doesn't always automatically play as it should but does beautifully when I checked it manually.
Undoubtedly needs an adjustment and ordinarily I'd do this myself but I simply don't have the time these days to work on the old clocks like I used to. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of regular maintenance but nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden chalet pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any real damage save a few chips on the roof but nothing really visible. The clock does show average signs of use, has a nice rustic patina going for it, and is simply gorgeous on display! This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, musical, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it. Have the music repaired, repair it yourself, or leave it the way it is. If you like this item and I'm sure you do, then I know you'll love the other items.
