Nice Large German 8 Day Unusual 3 Bird Deeply Carved Black Forest Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is a very nice find of a beautiful, large, deeply hand carved, lightly used, 8 day mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 65 years ago in the Black Forest of "Triberg, Germany" by "Hubert Herr, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world.

This clock is one of the most ornately carved clocks I've ever seen. It has a rare three bird case and an equally rare extra dark walnut finish! The clock is "hand carved" as the factory certification string tag states and undoubtedly carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine complete with seven, large hand carved grape leaves on the front, fancy branches, and another carved grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. The clock has a large, beautifully carved bird perched to the left of the dial and another, equally impressive carved wooden bird is perched to the right.

Both are staring outward as if watching for birds who might prey upon them. And there is a bit more complex bird perched in the branches atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The hands are the old style and nailed to the dial, not glued on.

The phrase, "Made in Germany" is found under the center. The top too is the old style and connected to the case by the old hook and eye system. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was produced by Hubert Herr and bears his name as well as the Triberg, Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity.

The tall wooden whistle or bellow tubes are intact and make good sound. A t the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the wooden dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.

The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos quite well too though I did notice that it doesn't always cuckoo and chime at the half hour mark which may require an adjustment. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some service or adjustments may be necessary once it arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.

The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces or damage and only average or less signs of use. It has a nice rustic look to it and is just gorgeous on display! The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 17" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point, and about 13 or so across the top.

This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
