The clock has a large, beautifully designed and uniquely carved top featuring a couple of cuckoo birds fluttering above a wooden nest with two wooden eggs in it; really cool! All of the carvings are finished in a rich, extra dark mahogany which makes it even more stunning! The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare pair of matching, fancy, wooden hands hands to point out the time. The country name, "W Germany" is found just above the 6 o'clock position. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. The wooden back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was created by "Regula" and bears the Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The whistle or bellow tubes are intact and make good sound.
A t the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! There is a metal lever on the left side of the case that allows you to disable the cuckoo and chime activities as you wish which is a wonderful feature for light sleepers or when company is in town.
The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos quite well too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance. Nonetheless, some service or adjustments may be necessary once it arrives at its new home.
We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces or damage. I did find a hard to see repair on the upper frame but it's not at all detracting. The clock has a superb rustic look to it and is just gorgeous on display! The clock is the ideal size too measuring about 14" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 9 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
