There is a wooden balcony above the dial and it is supported underneath by two round logs. There is a scrolled edge on the balcony and tapered trim on either side. The backdrop features a tapered wooden arch just above the two green wooden doors. The lower balcony is equally nice and carved as well with a carved wooden trim piece underneath.
There is a working wooden waterwheel to the left and a wooden flume too. There is a colorful carved wooden pine tree to the far left and a stack of kindling in the middle just below the dial. There is a colorful Black Forest man standing over a chopping block with an axe in his hand right next to a stack of logs ready to be split.
The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The country name, "Germany" is found in small print just below center. The back is wood too and secured with two metal latches. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case created by Hubert Herr and bearing his name and the Triberg Germany location. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music and animation, and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden green door to the right above the upper balcony and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then goes back inside the clock and closes the door. The bird appears yet again at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the clock, closing the door behind him.
Then, the door to the left above the balcony opens and a colorful man holding a Zither in his lap appears in the doorway and at the same time, the woodchopper begins to chop the log, the wooden waterwheel begins to turn while a high quality Swiss music box plays an extraordinary rendition of The Woodchopper's March, one of my all-time favorite tunes. The waterwheel and wood chopper stop when the music does and the man goes back inside the clock and closes the door; absolutely fascinating clock to watch and hear! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it was designed to do, and the music is wonderful! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of maintenance but regardless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a wooden chalet style pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces.
It shows less than average wear and is simply gorgeous on display! The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 14" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" or so at its deepest point, and about 11 or so across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, animated, musical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
