The clock is made to look like an old Burgermeister City Hall and features hand carved trim from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. There is beveled and tapered wooden trim under the roof line on both the left and right sides and each has colorful hand painted Edelweiss flowers and vines. There is a fancy wooden balcony just above the dial and the scallop trim has more hand painted flowers... The hand carved lower balcony is very fancy, loaded with more colorful vining flowers, and features a colorful Black Forest man holding an accordian sitting on a stump on the left edge and a colorful Black Forest lady is featured on the right edge... Looks like an old fashioned serenade to me.
The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The country origin, "W Germany" is found on the lower dial. The back is wood too and secured with two metal latches. The back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was produced by Hubert Herr and bears his name as well as "Triberg, Germany" as the point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music, and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small green wooden door above the upper balcony and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.
The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him. When he is safely inside, the green door to the left above the balcony opens and a colorful Black Forest man appears holding a Zither in his lap. At the same time, a high quality "Swiss Gueissaz" music box plays an extraordinary rendition of "Edelweiss, " one of world's favorite tunes from the Sound of Music! When the music stops, the man goes back inside the clock and closes the door; absolutely fascinating!
There is an intact label on the right side of the case identifying the song title, Swiss origin, and Gueissaz manufacture. The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it was designed to do, and the music is wonderful too! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of maintenance but regardless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style pendulum with another hand painted flower on it, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces. The clock shows beautifully and is gorgeous on display with a wonderful aging glow to it.
The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 11" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 10 or so across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, animated, musical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
