We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an excellent find of a beautiful, fully intact, musical, animated, working, deeply carved, mechanical cuckoo clock with a rare blended walnut finish that was created about 40 years ago in what was then, "Karlsruhe, West Germany" by "Albert Schwab, " one of the finest clock clock makers in this region of the world. The clock is positively breathtaking and measures about 11" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" at its deepest point and about 8 or so at its widest point. It is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.
The clock was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine complete with four, large, hand carved grape leaves on the front and fancy vines too. There is a very fancy, hand carved wooden bird perched on the vine to the right of the lower wooden dial and another equally impressive bird is perched to the left of the dial. Both appear to be fluttering over a carved wooden nest with two carved wooden chicks in it; very nice! There is a larger, ornately carved wooden bird perched comfortably atop the clock and looking as though he's ready to take flight. All of the carvings are deep, wavy, and fancy and have a remarkable blended walnut finish. The wooden dial has a woodtone backdrop and features Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch.
It removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case produced by "Regula" and bearing the Albert Schwab name and Karlsruhe, West Germany as the point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door to the right above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door and all the while, the birds fluttering over the nest move up and back as if caring for the chicks.
The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours while the birds tend the chicks in the nest. The bird then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him.
Once he's inside, the door to the left above the dial opens and a colorful man holding a Zither in his lap appears in the doorway. At the same time, a high quality, Swiss made music box plays a very nice rendition of "Edelweiss, " a classic, very popular tune from the Sound of Music. When the music is through, the man retreats back inside the case and closes the door; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, cuckoos well, and keeps good time too. I did notice the tune seems to miss a note or two but I still know the song and it plays well. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of regular maintenance but nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.
Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, the original factory information and set up instructions, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and three very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage, missing pieces, or repairs. The clock shows average or less signs of use and is simply gorgeous on display! This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, musical, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
