Nice Antique German 8 Day Black Forest Henry Coehler Working Carved Cuckoo Clock

We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an excellent find of a beautiful, deeply hand carved, very early 8 day, traditional mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 75 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany" by Henry Coehler.

" This was one of his first clocks ever marketed under his "HECO brand of fine clocks and it is a great example of his work! The clock is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.

It was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine complete with five, intricately hand carved grape leaves on the front and another carved grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. The clock has a large, beautifully designed and uniquely carved cuckoo bird perched in the branches atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight.

All of the carvings have a gorgeous dark mahogany finish which makes it even more stunning! The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of matching, fancy hands to point out the time. The country name, "Germany" is found just above the 6 o'clock position. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case and each is secured with a metal hasp.

The doors open to allow for any adjustment that may be needed from this angle. The back is wood too and secured with two metal latches.

The wooden back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was one of the earliest 8 day designs ever created by "Regula" and it bears the Henry Coehler Co name as well as the Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity.

The tall wooden whistle or bellow tubes are intact and the tops make good sound. A t the bottom of each hour, a colorful bakelite? Bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. Note the "HECO" name and "8 Day" script under the cuckoo door. The bird then gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos quite well too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance. Nonetheless, some service or adjustments may be necessary once it arrives at its new home.

We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces, damage, or repairs. It has a superb rustic look to it, just few nicks here and there, and is just gorgeous on display!

The clock is the ideal size too measuring about 15" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point, and about 11 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
