The clock is of the highest quality, ornately detailed, and has a dark mahogany finish! It is an impressive size too measuring about 19" or so high (from the tip of the antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 9 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 11 or so at its widest point. The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. There is an ornately carved wooden game bird mounted to the right side of the dial and an equally impressive, beautifully carved wooden rabbit mounted to the left side. The clock front is designed to look like intricate oak tree branches adorned with four, nicely carved wooden oak leaves as well as a carved hunting game bag with a strap on the very bottom. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare pair of matching, fancy, wooden hands to point out the time. There is an Alpen wooden mountain horn surrounding the wooden dial and it's complete with a wooden mouthpiece and wood horn end. The top is a separate carving and features a large wooden deer head with antlers along with two hand carved wooden shotguns criss-crossed underneath. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. There is a fully intact factory label on the back door giving full instructions in German. The door removes to allow access to the all metal, early, mechanical, weight driven movement created by "Regula" and bears the Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and they sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door to the left above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.
The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him. When he's safely inside, a colorful Black Forest man holding a Zither in his lap appears behind the door to the right above the dial.
At the same time, a high quality Swiss music box inside the case plays a heavenly rendition of "Rigoletto, " an all time classic and one of my favorite tune. When the music stops, the man goes back inside the clock case and closes the door; absolutely fascinating! There is an intact factory label on the back of the clock identifying the song title. The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, cuckoos well, and the music is very nice too.
Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance and little signs of use. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached golden metal chains, a fancy, hand carved wooden oak leaf pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces. I did find a hard to see repair on the lower frame but it's not at all detracting. It is an impressive clock with a wonderful patina and just gorgeous on display!
This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, very unique, mechanical, musical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
