This is an excellent find of a remarkable, unique, animated, musical mountain chalet cuckoo clock that was created about 50 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. I believe this clock was created for the Swiss market since it bears only the "Regula" markings (a Black Forest company) but not the point of origin... From a clock factory high in the Swiss Alps and carried to the US. The clock is made to look like the old mountain chalets of yesteryear in the Swiss/German Alps. It has a sophisticated look to it and extras like the carved beams on each side of the case and eaves in the roof. There are fancy wooden doors on either side of the rotating dance floor too and each has a red heart on the front. There are tapered trim pieces above the dance floor and a wooden balcony with more tapered trim just above the dial. There are four colorful dance couples mounted on a rotating dance platform just behind the balcony. The lower balcony in is carved too and features a colorful Black Forest man with an Accordian on the left side and an equally impressive Black Forest lady to the right side; looks like an old fashioned serenade to me.
The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. The back removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was produced by Regula. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music and animation, and cuckoo activity.
The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dance floor and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.At that moment, a high quality Swiss music box inside the case plays an extraordinary rendition of "Holiday in Switzerland, " a very popular old tune and all the while, the colorful dancers spin about while the platform rotates! The dancers stop when the music stops.
The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him. When he is safely inside, the dance platform begins to turn yet again and the dancers spin about as the music box plays a wonderful version of "Nach Regen Scheint die Sonne" (The Sun Shines After the Rain), an equally popular lively tune. The dancers stop dancing when the music is over and wait until the next opportunity; absolutely fascinating! This is how it is designed to work and it does so at the half hour.
But the clock stops working about five minutes before the top of the hour and works fine if I advance it a minute or two and restart the pendulum. Not sure why it does this and ordinarily I would do the simple repairs but I just don't have the time these days to work on the old clocks like I used to.The clock keeps good time and cuckoos as it was designed to do. The music too is very nice but like I said, it needs some attention. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.
The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style pendulum and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces. It does show some wear and maybe a nick here and there but nothing detracting.
The clock is one of the most beautiful clocks you could ever hang on a wall and has a nice patina going for it. The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 12 1/2" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 11 or so across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, animated, musical German timepiece with a solid history behind it. Have it repaired, repair it yourself, or leave it the way it is for display.
