The upper frame or top is amazingly detailed too with thick wavy carvings and a wooden deer head with antlers and with two wooden shotguns underneath. The dial itself has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time.
The dial is surrounded with a wooden Alpen horn complete with a wooden mouthpiece and a wooden horn end. The wooden back is secured with a metal latch and removes to allow access to the weight driven, mechanical movement produced by Regula.
A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music, and cuckoo activity. The bellow or sound tubes are intact and the tops look good; sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, the small wooden door to the right above the dial opens and a colorful bird stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral gong inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. Then the door to the left above the dial opens and a man holding a Zither appears in the doorway. At the same time, a "Swiss Thorens" music box inside the case plays an exquisite, long version of "Blue Danube, " one of the most recognized tunes ever made.
When the song is through, the man goes back inside and politely closes the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! There is a factory label on the right side of the clock identifying the song title, Thorens manufacture, and Switzerland origin. The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it should, and the music is wonderful too! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so it is possible that some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home.
We always recommend to our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will turn a classic like this one into a family heirloom in years to come. I've looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any missing pieces, repairs, or damage... Maybe an old nick here and there but moreover, it's got a great look to it and is absolutely gorgeous on display! It is an impressive clock and equally so in size measuring about 16 1/2" or so high (from the tip of the wooden antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 9" at its deepest point, and about 10 across the top.
The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a wooden, hand carved colorful oak leaf pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is a collection all by itself and is certain to attract a great deal of attention from guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a beautiful and quite rare, Black Forest, musical German timepiece.
