This is an excellent find of a beautifully and deeply carved 8 day hunter mechanical cuckoo clock with an outstanding, rare blended extra dark walnut finish! The clock was created about 65 years ago in the Black Forest of Villingen "Germany" by "Emil Schmeckenbecher, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. And is of the highest quality and ornately detailed. It is the perfect size too measuring about 17" high (from the tip of the antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 8" at its deepest point, and about 9 1/2 at its widest point. The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. There is a carved wooden game bird mounted to the right side of the dial and an equally impressive, beautifully carved wooden rabbit mounted to the left side. The clock front is designed to look like intricate oak tree branches adorned with seven nicely carved wooden oak leaves and branches as well as a carved hunting game bag with straps on the very bottom. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time.
T here is a wooden mountain horn surrounding the dial complete with a wooden mouthpiece and wood horn end. The top is a separate carving and features a large wooden deer head complete with antlers along with two hand carved wooden shotguns criss-crossed underneath. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement created by "Regula" and bearing the Schmeckenbecher name as well as the Germany point of origin.A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wood door above the dial and stands in the doorway.
He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a fancy wooden oak leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.
Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces, damage, or repairs. This clock shows little signs of use, is just gorgeous on display, and is a must have for anyone who cares about quality! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, very unique, mechanical, 8 day Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
