Breathtaking Black Forest Birds Nest & Chicks 2 Tune Music Dancers Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of a very nice, absolutely beautiful, unusual mechanical, musical animated cuckoo clock that was created about 60 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. The clock is just stunning with a unique design unlike any I've ever seen before. It is made to look like an active grape vine complete with thick branches and twelve deeply carved grape leaves. There is an ornately carved wooden nest near the bottom and two, young, carved wooden chicks are nestled into it and trying to tell their parent birds they are starving! There are two carved wooden parent birds mounted to the left and right of the clock dial and appear to be guarding, not feeding! All of the trim and carvings are deep and wavy and have a gorgeous, rare extra dark walnut finish!

It is a most impressive clock and among the nicest I've seen. It is an impressive size too measuring about 19" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point, and about 14 or so at its widest point.

The clock is carved mostly from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The upper frame is made of some sort of composite material and is remarkably detailed. There is a wooden balcony just above the dial and it is trimmed with wooden scallops.

There are four colorful Black Forest dance couples mounted on a rotating dance floor just above and behind the wooden balcony. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of fancy matching hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. The back removes to allow access to the mechanical weight driven movement produced by "Regula" and bearing the Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music, and cuckoo activity.

The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and they sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway.

He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. And once he's inside, the dance floor begins to turn and the couples spin about while a high quality, "Cuendet Swiss" music box inside the case plays a wonderful rendition of "Die Muhle im Schwarzwald" (Black Forest Mill), a very lively and popular tune. When the music stops, the dancers stop too and wait for the next interval. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and retreats back inside and closes the door. Once again the dancers spin about while the dance floor rotates and the music box inside the case this time plays a beautiful rendition of "Holzhackerbub'n Marsch" (Wood Choppers March), an all time favorite!

Once the music is finished, the dancers wait until the next half hour; absolutely fascinating! There is an intact label on the left side of the case identifying the Swiss origin, Cuendet manufacture, and song titles. Keep in mind that even though the clock looks newer, it is still an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance and little use too. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.

The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a fancy wooden oak leaf pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any missing pieces. I did find a couple of nicely done, old repairs on the lower frame and a few chips here and there but nothing detracting. Overall, the clock is just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a wonderful, animated, musical, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
