This a beautifully crafted, lightly used, working, rustic mechanical cuckoo clock that was hand made about 35 years ago in "Switzerland" by "Robert Lotscher, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. This traditional cuckoo clock has a beautiful blended walnut finish and is the ideal size too measuring about 11" at its highest point (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" or so deep, and about 8 1/2 wide across the top. The clock was carved using cured and aged Linden wood which is grown almost exclusively in the Northern Alps. The clock looks very much like an intricately carved grape vine complete with five, large, deeply carved grape leaves and vines as well as a carved exotic bird on the very top looking as though he is ready to fly.
The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching, fancy hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch.
It removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven (Regula) mechanical movement bearing the Robert Lotscher name and Switzerland location. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look and sound good too.At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating!
The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it was designed to do. I'm sure it will do the same for you but keep in mind it is an old clock and we don't know the service history. Some adjustments may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.
Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces... Maybe a small nick on the pendulum but moreover, the clock has a wonderful patina going for it; gorgeous on display!
This clock would be a coveted addition to any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very rare mechanical Swiss timepiece with a solid history behind it.
