This is a very nice, unusual, fully intact, nicely carved, working mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 50 years ago in Switzerland. The clock was created from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Swiss Alps. It was created to look like an intricate wooden mountain chalet with thick wooden trim under the eaves and simulated boulders on the roof which is much like the real homes that used them to keep the roof on during inclement weather. There are wooden windows with wood shutters on either side of the front frame with faux flower boxes and flowers below and wooden log trim on either side of the case. There is a lower wooden balcony on either side of the dial and a stack of logs is found there, more flowers too, and a frosty simulated tree as well.
There is another balcony on the right side of the case that features another colorful tree, more simulated flowers, and a pile of kindling and a log next to it; very nice! There is more wooden trim on the lower case below the two balconies. The dial has a brown backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of fancy matching hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case.
A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistles look and sound good! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the rustic door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.
The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it was designed to do.Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the full service history though it looks to have had past maintenance. Nonetheless, some adjustments or repairs may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden chalet pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or repairs.
It has only light wear and is in great shape; absolutely gorgeous on display! This is an impressive clock and the ideal size too measuring about 6 1/2" high, about 5" at its deepest point, and about 7 across the top. This clock is a collection all by itself and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, unusual mechanical Swiss timepiece with a solid history behind it.If you like this item and I'm sure you do, then I know you'll love the other items.
