We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an excellent find of a beautiful, fully intact, working, large, hunter style mechanical cuckoo clock with a rare blended walnut and color finish that was created about 35 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, West Germany. " The clock is positively breathtaking and is an impressive size too measuring about 17" or so high (from the tip of the antlers to the base of leaf on the bottom and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 8" at its deepest point and about 11" or so at its widest point. It is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine complete with three, large, deeply hand carved grape leaves and vines on the lower front and intricately carved wooden oak leaves on the upper frame. The top is a separate carving and features a large wooden deer head complete with antlers and two carved wooden shotguns mounted just below. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. The country name, "W Germany" is found on the lower dial. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case produced by "Regula" and bearing the country origin, West Germany as well. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity.
The bellow or whistle tubes look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway.
He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works just fine here, cuckoos well, and keeps good time too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of regular maintenance but nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.
Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage, missing pieces, or repairs. I did see a tiny crack just below the lower dial but it's not at all detracting.
The clock shows little signs of use and is simply gorgeous on display! This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
