We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of a breathtaking, working, lightly used, hand carved mountain chalet cuckoo clock that was created about 40 years ago in the Black Forest of "Triberg, Germany" by "Hubert Herr, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. The clock is made to look like an old mountain chalet home like many that used to dot the landscape high in the mountains of the Black Forest. The clock features hand carved trim from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. There is fancy scrolled wooden trim under the roof line and an equally ornate wooden balcony with wooden scallops just above the dial. The lower balcony is also beveled and uniquely carved. It features a colorful Black Forest man sitting on a stump holding an accordian on the left and an equally impressive colorful Black Forest woman standing to the right... Looks like a serenade to me! The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time.
The country name, "Germany" is found just below center. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case bearing the Hubert Herr name and Triberg Germany location. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity.
The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small green wooden door above the upper balcony and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.
The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it was designed to do. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home.
The movement does show signs of maintenance but regardless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style wooden pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces and only little signs of use. The clock is gorgeous on display and is the ideal size too measuring about 7 1/2" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 7 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
