This is an excellent find of a beautiful, fully intact, musical, working, Serenade, mechanical chalet cuckoo clock with a rare blended walnut and color finish that was created about 65 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. " The clock is positively breathtaking and measures about 11" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point and about10" at its widest point. It is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It was created to look like an old Burgermeister hall where town dances were frequently held. There is a deeply carved, fancy wooden balcony on the lower part of the clock and a colorful Black Forest man playing an accordian is found to the left side and an equally impressive Black Forest lady is found to the right; looks like a serenade to me!

Another wooden balcony complete with tapered trim is found just above the wooden dial. The wood dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time.

The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case produced by "Regula" and bearing the "Germany" point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The wooden bellow or whistle tubes look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small green door to the right above the dial and stands in the doorway.

He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. When he is safely inside, the green door to the left opens and a colorful man with a Zither in his lap appears in the doorway.

At the same time, a high quality, Swiss music box inside the case plays a wonderful rendition of "The Gypsy Baron, " one of the most recognized tunes ever. When the music is through, the man retreats back inside the clock and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him. Once he's inside, the door to the left above the dial opens again and the colorful man appears yet again in the doorway but this time the Swiss music box plays a heavenly rendition of an equally popular tune, "Southern Roses" before the man retreats back inside the case and closes the door; absolutely fascinating! There is a fully intact label on the back of the case identifying the song titles. The clock works just fine here, cuckoos well, keeps good time, and the music is very nice too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home.

The movement does show signs of regular maintenance but nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden chalet pendulum, and three very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.

Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage, missing pieces, or repairs. The clock shows average signs of use, has a nice rustic patina going for it, and is simply gorgeous on display! This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, musical, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
