We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of a breathtaking, working, lightly used, hand carved mountain chalet cuckoo clock that was created about 35 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, West Germany. I have never seen a case design like this before and I've seen a lot of cuckoo clocks.
Yes, there are deeply carved, very ornate birds on the case but the one to the left of the dial appears to be chirping and is holding a conductors' baton as if he or she is conducting the cuckoo activity and sound; really cool! The clock is made to look like an old mountain chalet home like many that used to dot the landscape high in the mountains of the Black Forest. The clock features three, very deeply hand carved grape leaves on the front and wooden shakes on the sides of the case and on the roof as well. The wooden dial has a wooden backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare matching pair of fancy wooden hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch.
It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case produced by "Regula" and bearing the West Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look good and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway.
He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it was designed to do. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be needed once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of maintenance but regardless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.
Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.
Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces and only little signs of use. I did find a slight crack or two on the dial but nothing really detracting; I doubt if anything could! The clock is gorgeous on display and is the ideal size too measuring about 10" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" or so at its deepest point, and about 6 1/2 or so across the top.
This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to captivate the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, very rare Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
