Nice Old Large Unusual German Welby Traditional 8 Day Black Forest Cuckoo Clock

We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our.

This is an outstanding find of a beautiful, fully intact, working, large mechanical 8 day cuckoo clock that was created for "Welby" about 70 years ago in the Black Forest of "Triberg, Germany" by "Hubert Herr, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world! The clock is absolutely stunning and has a rare extra dark walnut finish; very nice! The clock measures about 13 1/2" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point and about 10 or so at its widest point. It is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood and looks very much like an intricately carved grape vine complete with five, large, deeply hand carved grape leaves on the front and fancy vines too. There is a large, ornately hand carved wooden bird perched comfortably atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight.

All of the carvings are deep, wavy, and fancy. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It has a mostly intact factory label identifying the Welby production and operating instructions as well. The back removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case produced by "Hubert Herr" and bearing the country origin, Triberg, Germany as well.

A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works just fine here, cuckoos well, and keeps good time too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of regular maintenance but nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.

Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces. The clock does show some wear and a few old, well done old repairs on the lower frame but nothing that detracts... I doubt if anything could!

The clock is simply gorgeous on display! This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
