Nice Lightly Used German Black Forest Animated Nest Birds & Eggs Cuckoo Clock

We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our.

This is an outstanding find of a very nice, lightly used, absolutely beautiful, mechanical animated cuckoo clock that was created about 60 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany" by the "Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company;" you don't get any more original than that! Actually, the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company did a great deal to popularize the modern cuckoo clock. They were quick to mobilize after WWII and did all they could to get one of their fine clocks into the hands of GI's returning home from the war. My father brought one home and I remember it to this day. The clock is just stunning and a unique design.

It is made to look like an active grape vine complete with four deeply carved grape leaves and branches. There is an ornately carved wooden nest near the bottom and two wooden eggs are nestled into it. There are two carved wooden parent birds tending to the nest and another, larger carved wooden bird at the very top looking as though he's ready to take flight. All of the trim and carvings are deep and wavy and have a gorgeous blended oak finish and the birds are quite colorful! It is a most impressive clock and among the nicest I've seen.

It measures about 12 1/2" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 /12" at its deepest point, and about 9 at its widest point. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.

The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of fancy matching hands to point out the time. The country name, "Germany" appears just below the center of the dial.

The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. The back removes to allow access to the mechanical weight driven movement bearing the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company name along with the Germany point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. While the bird is making his rounds, the parent birds move up and down as if tending to the nest and they stop when the cuckoo sounds are through and the bird is back inside the case.

The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and all the while, the parent birds rock up and down as the bird is singing his cuckoo and chime song; absolutely fascinating! Keep in mind that even though the clock looks newer, it is still an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance and little use too. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.

The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any damage, repairs, or missing pieces; maybe a chip here and there but nothing detracting. The clock shows only little signs of use and is just gorgeous on display!

This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a wonderful, animated, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
