It is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It is created to look like intricately carved oak tree branches complete with ten, large, deeply hand carved grape leaves on the front and fancy vines too. There is a large, ornately hand carved wooden game bird mounted to the right of the dial and an ornately carved wooden rabbit mounted to the left and a game bag at the bottom complete with straps. The top is a separate carving featuring a deer head complete with antlers and two wooden shotguns mounted underneath; really cool! There is a wooden mountain horn encircling the dial complete with a mouthpiece and horn end.
The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy hands to point out the time. The country name, "Germany" is found on the lower dial. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case produced by "Regula" and bearing the Bachmaier and Klemmer name and country origin, West Germany as well. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door to the right above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him.
When he's safely inside the small door to the left opens and a colorful man holding a Zither appears in the doorway. At the same time, a high quality, "Swiss" made "Thorens" music box plays a heavenly rendition of "Flittermaus, " one of the all time favorite tunes ever created. When the music finishes, the man retreats back inside and closes the door; fascinating! The clock works just fine here, cuckoos well, and keeps good time too though I did notice the music box sticks from time to time. Probably needs a simple adjustment and ordinarily I would do this but I simply don't have the time these days to work on the old clocks like I used to. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of regular maintenance but nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.
The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden oak leaf pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage, missing pieces, or repairs. The clock shows average or less signs of use and is simply gorgeous on display!
This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it. Have the music repaired, repair it yourself, or leave it the way it is. If you like this item and I'm sure you do, then I know you'll love the other items.
