Nice Antique German Black Forest Hunter Deer Deeply Hand Carved Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an excellent, rare find of a beautifully and deeply carved, antique hunter mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 90 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany.

The clock is of the highest quality, ornately detailed, and has a very nice blended mahogany finish! It is the ideal size too measuring about 18 1/2" or so high (from the tip of the antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 9 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 10 1/2 at its widest point. The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.

There is a carved wooden game bird mounted to the left side of the wooden dial and an equally impressive, beautifully carved wooden rabbit mounted to the right side. The clock front is designed to look like intricate oak tree branches adorned with six nicely carved wooden oak leaves as well as a carved hunting game bag with straps on the very bottom and a carved wooden shotgun just behind it. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The top is a separate carving attached to the case with the old hook and eye system. The top features a large wooden deer head with wooden antlers; really nice!

Each side has a wooden block door with a wooden latch. These are quite secure and remove easily to allow for any adjustment from this angle if ever required. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, early, rack style, mechanical, weight driven movement created by "G Mangem" which is the old name for what is now called, Regula.

The movement is marked, Made in Germany. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.

The bird reappears at the top of the hour and gives off another single cuckoo and chime before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! I believe the bird is supposed to cuckoo the number of hours at the top of the hour so it probably needs to be adjusted to do this. There is a braided cord extending from the bottom of the case and it has a brass ring on the end. I understand this is used to advance the cuckoo a half hour at a time when the cuckoo is working properly which is a great feature if and when the clock time and cuckoo ever need to be calibrated. The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well and as described. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance and there is a maintenance label on the back. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.

The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a fancy, hand carved wooden oak leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces. I did notice the deer head has some chips on it where the antler goes in though it's not at all detracting and works the way it currently is. Overall, the clock has a great patina and is just gorgeous on display!

This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, very unique, antique mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
