Large Working German Black Forest 8 Day Hubert Herr Rare 2 Bird Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our.

This is an excellent find of a beautiful, deeply hand carved, large, 8 day, mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 60 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany" by "Hubert Herr, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. This impressive traditional clock is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood and has a rare case with two large carved wooden birds on the front.

Linden wood clocks are hewn from trees grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine complete with four, large, ornately hand carved grape leaves on the front and fancy vine carvings too. There is another carved grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. There is also a large, intricately carved bird perched on the lower branches near the bottom and another sitting in the branches atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. All of the carvings are finished in a rich deep mahogany which makes it even more stunning! The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of matching, fancy hands to point out the time. The country name, "Made in Germany" is found just above the 6 o'clock position. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch.

The wooden back removes to allow access to the all metal, early, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was created by Hubert Herr and bears his name as well as the "Triberg, Germany" point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden whistle or bellow tubes are intact and the tops make good sound. A t the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.

The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos quite well too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance. Nonetheless, some service or adjustments may be necessary once it arrives at its new home.

We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come.

The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces or damage. It looks to have had great care and has a great patina.

The clock has a superb rustic look to it and is just gorgeous on display! The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 14" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 10 1/2 across the top.

This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
