Large Unusual German 8 Day Black Forest 3 Bird Deeply Carved Wood Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our.

This is a very nice find of a beautiful, large, deeply hand carved, 8 day, mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 65 years ago in the Black Forest of "Triberg, Germany" by "Hubert Herr, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world! The clock is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine complete with four, large hand carved grape leaves on the front, fancy branches, and another carved grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. The clock has a large, beautifully carved bird perched at the bottom.

There is yet another, larger, and a bit more complex bird is perched to the right of the dial and an even larger carved bird perched in the branches atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. All of the carvings are finished in a rich mahogany which makes it even more stunning! The wood dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time.

The country name, "Germany" is found under the center. There is a hinged wooden door on the right side and it is secured with a metal hasp. It opens to allow access to the movement from this side of the case if any adjustments are ever needed from this angle. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement inside the case that was created by Hubert Herr and bears his name as well as the Triberg Germany point of origin.

A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden whistle or bellow tubes are intact and the tops make good sound. A t the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.

The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos quite well too though I noticed that the bird doesn't always close the door; probably needs a small adjustment. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some service or adjustments may be necessary once it arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.

Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.

Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any missing pieces or damage and only average or less signs of use. I think the bird on the right is a replacement since it looks like part of the existing leaf is missing; looks great, though! It has a nice rustic look to it and is just gorgeous on display! The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 14" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" or so at its deepest point, and about 10 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
