Breathtaking German Black Forest Large Hunter Deer 8 Day Carved Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is a one of a kind clock... It's undoubtedly one of the largest and nicest 8 day hunter cuckoo clocks it has been my privilege to own. It is quite large and measures about 24" high (from the tip of the antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 10" at its deepest point, and about 14 at its widest point.

The clock was created about 50 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, Villingen "West Germany" by "Emil Schmeckenbecher, " one of the finest craftsmen in this region of the world. It is very seldom that you find an extra large, hand carved cuckoo clock that is finished in a remarkable blend of Dark and Medium Walnut as this one is; very nice!

The clock is beautifully hand carved, of the highest quality, and ornately detailed! The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. There is a carved wooden game bird mounted to the left side of the dial and an equally impressive, beautifully carved wooden rabbit mounted to the right side.

The clock front is designed to look like an intricate oak tree adorned with ten, large, nicely carved wooden oak leaves as well as a carved hunting game bag with straps on the very bottom. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of matching fancy hands to point out the time. T here is a wooden mountain horn surrounding the dial complete with a wooden mouthpiece and wooden horn end. The top is a separate carving and features a large wooden deer head with antlers and two wooden shotguns mounted underneath; wow! The back is wood too and secured with two latches.

It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement created by "Regula" and bearing the Emil Schmeckenbecher name as well as the West Germany origin. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway.

He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him; absolutely fascinating!

The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved oak leaf wooden pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage or missing pieces.

It shows average or less signs of use and is just stunning on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, very unique, mechanical, 8 day Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
