We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of a beautiful, fully intact, working, animated, musical mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 50 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, "West Germany" by "Emil Schmeckenbecher, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world! It is absolutely gorgeous, lightly used, and one of the most unique clocks ever produced.
The clock is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It was created to look like a working lumber mill like some you used to see in the Alps of southern Germany. There is a beautiful lower frame on this clock with a mountainside landscape, complete with a detailed, colorful pine tree on either end.A large wooden balcony with dark beaded trim is found above the dial and it's supported by two fancy wooden trim pieces underneath. The balcony is complete with a fancy wooden fence on either end, a stack of logs to the left, two animated Black Forest men holding a two-man saw over a wooden log, a few stumps, and a large stump under the axe of a colorful wood chopper man to the far right. A colorful bird is found in the round opening above the platform and flanked on either side by a wooden shutter. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight drive movement inside the case produced by "Regula" and bearing the E Schmeckenbecher name.
The bellows or whistles are intact and sound good too. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, music, and cuckoo activity. At the bottom of each hour, the colorful bird near the top wakes up and gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then goes back to sleep and all the while, the two men operate their saw going back and forth. The bird wakes again at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back to his slumbers.
Then, wood chopper man brings his axe up and down while the sawyers continue to saw and a high quality Swiss music box inside the case plays a wonderful rendition of the Woodchoppers March, one of the more popular tunes ever produced! The chopper stops chopping when the tune is finished but the wood sawyers continue to saw... The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, animates and plays music as it should, and cuckoos as it was designed to do. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Nonetheless, some adjustments or repairs may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home.
We always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a chalet style pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage, missing pieces, or repairs. It shows less than average signs of use and is absolutely gorgeous on display!
This is an impressive clock and the ideal size too measuring about 12 1/2" at its highest point (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 10 across the top. This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, mechanical musical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
